april reading list

I am so excited right now to be posting a book review! I haven't done one of these in what seems like forever so it feels good to be reviewing books again. Seriously is there anything better than taking the time to read? Even if it means binging until the wee hours of the morning to finish it! I have come across some really great novels over the last month and I wanted to share them! I read all of these books in under a week and would definitely read most of them again. Here are my picks for April, ranked from favorite to least...

Description: the main character, Sam, gets in a tragic accident and has to repeat the same day seven times until she figures out what she needs to change. I was a little wary about this premise at first because I know there have been lots of movies that have a plot like that, but this book is definitely more complex and has an ending I wasn't really expecting! I first heard about this book after seeing the preview for the movie that just came out! I didn't even know that it was a book until one of my friends said that she read it and absolutely loved it! I have to say, I seriously flew through this book...aka I stayed up until 1:30 am two nights in a row to finish it. Thats how badly I wanted to read it! I wasn't so sure about it as first, as I kind of hated most of the main characters. However, there is such good character development throughout the book and I ended up loving it! I think the storyline is really interesting, especially the ending, because its definitely not what I thought was going to happen. I kind of have a love/hate relationship with what happened in the end because I guess it was a little harder to come to terms with it. This book definitely has a more "real" ending, if thats the right word? So I think I was a little mad for a while about it until I realized that what happened was kind of inevitable. PS, if anyone has read this book, let me know your favorite characters in the comments! Kent is probably one of my favorite male characters that I have ever read and I am still obsessing over him! Major heart eyes.

Description: This book is set years from now, in a world where love is considered a disease and everyone must be "cured" from it when they turn 18. Lena is looking forward to being cured because she has seen how "delirium" affected her mom and sister. A few months before she is cured she meets Alex, who changes her whole view on the world and of love. She is then forced to make a decision that will change her whole life. Full description here.

Hmph. That is my exact reaction to this book. Let me just say, this ending crushed me beyond belief. However, I know this is a trilogy so I have hope for the future, ha. This book reminds me of the Hunger Game and Divergent series a lot, so if you enjoy those types of books, I'm sure you would love this! Firstly, there is a lot of character development in this book which I really love. The thing I also really liked about this book was that the main character wasn't your typical heroine. She is just an average girl trying to get through her life. She's a rule follower, a people pleaser, and just really normal. So when she has to make some hard decisions, its interesting to see how she goes through the process of changing. The plot of this book really intrigued me because 1) I love a good love story and 2) it's so interesting to even think of a world where no one would experience love or even normal emotions when it's such a big part of our every day lives! PS, I'm pretty sure all three books in this series are $4 on amazon...you're welcome!

Description: the main character, Madeline, has been sick for 18 years and can't even go outside without risking her own death. A boy, Olly, moves next-door and makes her rethink everything about the way she has been living her life. Full description here.

This was another book that's being made into a movie, however only the trailer is out right now! This book is also written by the same lady who wrote If I stay which I also love. I really liked this book as well, not as much as Before I fall but I also finished this in about 3 days! It was a pretty average book until the very last half when I was like WHAT IS HAPPENING. This book has one of the biggest twists ever and I have to say I was 100 million percent not expecting what happened. I was in actual shock around the last couple chapters...mouth hanging open and everything! Definitely a must read for people who love surprise endings. PS, I absolutely love the nurse in this book, she reminds me of the lady in the movie Splanglish!

Description: read the description here. I think it explains the book a lot better than I could!

I heard a lot about this book right around the time that the tv show was about to come out. The show looked pretty good so I decided that I wanted to try and read the book before I started watching! However, I ended up reading the book and watching the show at the same time. I watched the whole season, but I wasn't in love with it. I liked all the actors and actresses and I thought they did a decent job sticking to the storyline, but sometimes it just seemed to drag on and get a little boring. I liked the book a lot more and would recommend it, but the beginning was definitely a slow start for me. This book just took me a little while to get into! While I can't say that it's one of my favorite books ever, or that I would read it again, I did think there were a lot of plot twists that definitely had me guessing the whole time. There was a lot of drama (who doesn't like a good dose of that?!) and secrets which was fun to read. The one thing was that I felt like it took forever to read. The book is also supposed to be about a murder mystery, kind of an "edge of your seat" type thing but I didn't really get that at all. I think maybe the fact that everything was surrounded by parents with kindergarten drama made it a little less serious for me. Either way, I still thought it was a good read! If you like books that leave you guessing and trying to figure things out, you will love this! The ending was totally unexpected and I liked how it was resolved! If you want to watch the show and haven't yet, I would definitely read the book first and then watch because they change a few things and plot lines!

Weirdly enough, I found out about this through Netflix when my boyfriend and I were scrolling through the category "movies based on books"....who knew! My mom and I absolutely love the movie adaption of Practical Magic so I was so excited when I found the book! PS, if you haven't watched the movie yet, you totally should. This book was a little different from the movie (isn't that always the case?) but I still loved reading it! I love when I am able to picture what the characters look like and it just made it so much more fun to read. This book is a shorter, lighter read which I kind of love! I would definitely suggest if you love the movie!

Description: two sisters, Dara and Nick are very close until they get in an accident that essentially leaves them not talking and tears their whole family apart. The girls struggle to accept change after the accident until Dara and another little girl go missing. Nick has to figure out the mystery and try to save them both. Full description here.

All I can say about this book was that it was so confusing. The whole book goes back and forth between the two characters and timelines so it was a little hard to follow! I really like this author (she also wrote Before I Fall Delirium!) but I wasn't a huge fan of this book. I didn't particularly like any of the characters in the book that much so I didn't feel compelled to get through the book like I do with others. It was still a good story, and I can say I was extremely surprised (and confused!) by the ending. I definitely didn't expect what happened and everything seemed to make a lot more sense after I finished it! I did really like the closeness of the two sisters though, I thought it added a little drama to the story! I think the plot of the story, and the ending for sure, are very cool, but overall I wasn't that thrilled and found myself a little bored with it.

What good books have you read this month? Leave suggestions in the comments below!

XO, Raquel
